SUMMARY:New Year's Eve Sitting
DESCRIPTION:At the New Year’s Eve Sitting we combine Zen meditation with companionship and the celebration of the turn of the year. It is not a retreat or a seminar\, but shared time of the Sangha. The New Year’s Eve Sitting is also open to external participants who would like to get a taste of Zen over the holidays and to get to know the Hyakujōgan Zendo. \nThe programme includes shared Zazen (Zen meditation) morning and evening and 1.5 hours of Samu (work meditation) in the morning. Enough free time remains for walks and for exchange within the Sangha. Taking part in the meditation is voluntary and at your own responsibility. \nThe shared time is not spent in silence. Participants may\, however\, agree for instance to spend the time from getting up until breakfast in silence. The New Year’s Eve celebration is “conventional”\, sociable and not spent in silence.\nPreparing the meals and all other work required in the house is done jointly by the participants. For the most part this work is carried out as part of the morning Samu. Walks or hikes on the Hohe Wand – alone or in groups – can be arranged privately by participants and are undertaken at their own responsibility and risk. \nRegistration is open now for members of the BodhidharmaZendo. Registration for guests is possible only from 1 December 2025. Number of participants is limited. Association members may also come for the New Year’s Eve celebration alone; external guests should join for the preceding days as well\, in order to get to know the group. \nPlease register by e-mail to mail@bodhidharmazendo.net \nSchedule: \n– 8:00 – Zazen (Zen meditation)\n– 9:00 – Shared breakfast (informal)\n– 10–11:30 – Samu (work meditation\, simple tasks in and around the house)\n– 12:30 – Lunch (informal. We cook for ourselves\, so all participants take turns or work together. Whoever feels like it. Vegetarian food.)\n– Afternoon free (opportunity for a shared hike or similar)\n– approx. 18:00 – Dinner (informal)\n– 19:00 – Zazen (Zen meditation) \nCosts: €50 per night including full board (€35 for association members)\nWith a large number of participants\, accommodation in twin rooms; with fewer than 18 participants\, single rooms \nStart: 29 December\, 6:00 pm\, with a shared dinner. \nFurther information: \n– Please bring comfortable black clothing for meditation\n– Warm jacket and sturdy shoes (walking meditation may take place outdoors)\n– Slippers\, thick socks or similar for indoors\n– Please bring your own bed linen and towels. If that is not possible\, the house provides them for an extra charge of €7.\n– Photographs will be taken at the event. Participants agree to appear in photographs\, which may also be published. \nGetting there: See here

SUMMARY:Lecture by Univ.-Doz. Dr. Hisaki Hashi: "Zen and Philosophy in the Present Day – How is a Good Life Possible?"
DESCRIPTION:Sangha member of the Bodhidharma Zendo\, Univ.-Doz. Dr. Hisaki Hashi\, Dharma name Kōyō\, offers an academic lecture on the subject of Zen and comparative philosophy. \nCourse at the Bodhidharma Zendo \n“Zen and Philosophy in the Present Day – How is a Good Life Possible?” \nLecture and discussion by:Univ.-Doz. Dr. Hisaki HASHI(Department of Philosophy\, University of Vienna)(CEO\, Association for Comparative Philosophy and Interdisciplinary Education “KoPhil”)Sangha member of the Zendo\, Dharma name: Kōyō \nDate: Sat.\, October 17\, 2026\, 2:30 PM – 4:00 PMLocation: Bodhidharma Zendo Vienna\, Fleischmarkt 16\, 1010 Vienna. In the courtyard\, second door on the right. Ring the bell for “ÖBR Meditation”\, 1st floor (second door\, then second door again) Cost: Admission free – donations requested \nWhat is it about? \nSurrounding society is oriented towards the zeitgeist of “AI” and “total digitalization.” But how does our life continue with this? A return to the old days is no longer possible. However\, let us consider the past: every past was in the middle of its respective present\, in the here and now. Everyone was more or less disoriented in the midst of it.Buddhism provides suggestions and pointers on what one should set as a goal and how one can build a good life with it. In Zen especially\, one finds an ever-renewing strength in the body and in consciousness. In this course\, the necessity and advantages of Buddhism in our time are explained in a generally understandable way based on Comparative Philosophy. This will be followed by a communicative exchange for questions\, additions\, and suggestions from the participants. \n \nPhoto: Univ.-Doz. SUMMARY:Easter Sesshin
DESCRIPTION:Zen retreat over the course of one week. This intensive Zen training takes place in seclusion and absolute silence within the community of the Sangha (the group of practitioners).Led by: Abbot Seigaku Kigen Osho \nThe daily schedule is precisely structured\, usually beginning at 3:30 AM and ending around 9:30 PM. Many times throughout the day\, sitting meditation (Zazen) and walking meditation (Kinhin) alternate with one another. Sutras are recited (transmitted scriptures of Buddha’s teachings)\, there is a daily Dharma talk (teaching) as well as Long Kinhin (long-distance walking meditation in the Hohe Wand Nature Park) and the opportunity for Taiwa (individual conversation with Kigen Osho\, if desired). Through Samu (work meditation involving simple tasks in the house and garden)\, practitioners have the opportunity to practice Zen during everyday activities\, striving for Samadhi—the “non-thinking” achieved through full concentration on the activity or complete merging with the respective task—to the point of forgetting the personal self. The silence and the many hours of Zazen enable deep insights and experiences to be gained. \nCost for full board: \nEUR 350 for members (EUR 400 for non-members). Dana at your own discretion. Prior experience is required for participation; please write us an email to clarify this. Further information here. Registration by email to mail@bodhidharmazendo.net.
