SUMMARY:Two-day Zazenkai “extra-light”
DESCRIPTION:Zen retreat on the Hohe Wand \nThis special Zazenkai “extra-light” is open to everyone\, but was initially designed for a group of students from the University of Vienna. It has a lighter daily schedule than a regular Zazenkai and is therefore also open to beginners and newcomers. The difference is that the meditation periods are shorter and the wake-up time in the morning is later. This makes the practice weekend somewhat easier. \nThe Zazenkai light is led by Abbot Seigaku Kigen Oshō and is suitable for interested individuals who have never participated in a Zen retreat\, as well as for experienced practitioners who prefer a milder retreat. \nWe are still looking for help with this retreat from among the association members! If you are a member of the Bodhidharma Zendo and would like to take on one of the various officer positions (e.g.\, Jiki-Jitsu\, Shoji\, Shoshoji\, Tenzo\, Shotens\, Handikans\, etc.) or help with the setup and organization\, please contact us at mail@bodhidharmazendo.net – Thank you! \nThe retreat weekend offers an opportunity for Zen practice in the Rinzai Zen tradition. The entire retreat takes place in absolute silence. The daily schedule is precisely structured\, usually beginning early in the morning and ending late in the evening. The practice consists of: sitting meditation (Zazen)\, walking meditation (Kinhin)\, Long Kinhin (long-distance walking meditation in the Hohe Wand Nature Park)\, the recitation of sutras (traditional scriptures of Buddha’s teachings)\, Dharma talks (teachings)\, and the possibility for Taiwa (individual interview with Zen priest Kigen Oshō\, if desired). Through Samu (work meditation involving simple tasks in and around the house)\, practitioners have the opportunity to practice Zen during everyday activities\, aiming for Samadhi—the “non-thinking” achieved through full concentration on the task or complete merging with the respective activity—until the personal self is forgotten. The silence and the many hours of Zazen allow for deep insights and experiences to be gained. \nPrevious meditation experience is required for participation\, or the form will be explained during the briefing at the beginning of the Sesshin light—however\, if you are completely new\, please write an email to clarify whether this retreat is suitable for you: mail@bodhidharmazendo.net. To become familiar with the Zen form\, you can also attend the introductory lecture and/or introductory course at the Vienna Bodhidharma Zendo beforehand. You can find the dates for these introductory events at this link (click through the months until you reach the “Introduction…” entries). \nThe exact daily schedule\, rules\, costs\, and program\nas well as further interesting information about our Zazenkais can be found here.

SUMMARY:Lecture by Dr. Hisaki Hashi: "Zen and Philosophy in the Present – How is a Good Life Possible?"
DESCRIPTION:Sangha member of the Bodhidharma Zendo\, Associate Professor Dr. Hisaki Hashi\, Dharma name Kōyō\, offers an academic lecture on Zen and comparative philosophy. \nCourse at the Bodhidharma Zendo \n“Zen and Philosophy in the Present – How is a Good Life Possible?” \nLecture with discussion by:Associate Professor Dr. Hisaki HASHI(Department of Philosophy\, University of Vienna)(CEO\, Association for Comparative Philosophy and Interdisciplinary Education “KoPhil”)Sangha member of the Zendo\, Dharma name: Kōyō \nDate: Sat\, October 17\, 2026\, 2:30 PM – 4:00 PMLocation: Bodhidharma Zendo Vienna\, Fleischmarkt 16\, 1010 Vienna. In the courtyard\, second door on the right. Ring at “ÖBR Meditation”\, 1st floor (second door\, then second door again) Cost: Free admission – donations requested \nFurther dates will take place on November 21\, 2026\, and January 30\, 2027. \nWhat is it about? \nThe surrounding society is oriented towards the zeitgeist of “AI” and “total digitalization.” But how does our life continue with this? A return to the old times is no longer possible. However\, let us consider the past: every past was in the midst of its respective present\, in the here and now. Everyone was more or less disoriented within it.Buddhism offers suggestions and guidance on what one should aim for and how to build a good life with it. Especially in Zen\, one finds an ever-renewing strength in the body and consciousness. In this course\, the necessity and advantages of Buddhism in our time will be explained in an generally understandable way\, based on Comparative Philosophy. This will be followed by a communicative exchange for questions\, additions\, and suggestions from the course participants. \n \nPhoto: Associate Professor Dr. Hisaki Hashi\, Copyright: Foto Nelson\, Vienna \nFurther websites:https://ucrisportal.univie.ac.at/en/persons/hisaki-hashi/https://www.kophil-interdis.atwww.kophil.at \nSuccessive development of the number of interested readers for HASHI’s monograph – A New Translation and Interpretation of Zen Buddhism by Dōgenhttps://lit-verlag.de/isbn/978-3-643-51008-2/Reading sample: See Open Access chapter in https://phaidra.univie.ac.at/detail/o:2176479 \nNew release by LIT\, Series: Comparative Philosophy for a Global WorldVol. 10 Hisaki HASHI\, Karen GLOY (Eds.) https://lit-verlag.de/isbn/978-3-643-51243-7/Reading sample: See “Phaidra”: https://phaidra.univie.ac.at/detail/o:2112405

SUMMARY:Zazenkai light
DESCRIPTION:Zen retreat on the Hohe Wand \nThe Zazenkai light follows a somewhat gentler daily schedule than a regular Zazenkai and is therefore ideal for beginners and newcomers. The difference lies in slightly shorter meditation periods and a somewhat later start in the morning. This makes the practice weekend a little easier. \nThe Zazenkai light is led by Abbot Seigaku Kigen Oshō and suits those who have never taken part in a Zen retreat\, but equally experienced practitioners who prefer a gentler retreat. All other rules are as usual and in accordance with the form. \nThe retreat weekend offers an opportunity for Zen practice in the tradition of Rinzai Zen. The entire retreat takes place in complete silence. The daily schedule is precisely structured\, usually beginning at 5:00 am and ending around 9:00 pm. Sitting meditation (Zazen) and walking meditation (Kinhin) alternate many times a day. Sutras are recited twice daily (handed-down texts of the Buddha’s discourses)\, each day there is a Dharma talk (teaching) and the opportunity for Taiwa (private interview with the teacher). Through Samu (carrying out simple\, necessary work)\, practitioners have the opportunity to practise Zen in everyday activity\, aiming at Samadhi – that “non-thinking” reached through full concentration on the doing\, through complete merging with the activity at hand – to the point of forgetting the personal self. The silence and the many hours of Zazen make it possible to gain deep insights and experiences. \nParticipation requires prior meditation experience; alternatively the form is explained during the introduction at the beginning of the Sesshin light – but if you are entirely new\, please write an e-mail so we can clarify whether this retreat is suitable for you: mail@bodhidharmazendo.net \nFurther information here.
